The Highs and Lows .. St Bernards Seniors, Reserves and U19s celebrated great wins and Chisel's 250th at 'the Pit' on Saturday, however our thoughts are with young Tim O'Sullivan and Gary Boucher.

Tim O'Sullivan was badly injured in the U18 game at Oakleigh. Tim flew at a contest, only to be polaxed by a strong front-on impact. Tim showed incredible courage to play out the second half, contributing very well but by late afternoon he was rushed to hospital and underwent surgery to repair four ruptured blood vessels.  Tim will spend up to a week in hospital and will not play footy again this year. Tim's mum Allison said Tim is progressing well "Tim's first concern after waking from surgery was that he will miss the rest of the footy season" Our thoughts and best wishes to Tim, his parents Allison & Peter and his brother Ben.

Gary Boucher is also in hospital after a work accident and all at the club wish Gary a huge 'get well soon' .. we hope to see the big fella back on deck as soon as possible

A big thank you to all involved in making yesterdays Ladies lunch another successful day with just under 100 in attendance All the ladies enjoyed the complimentary champagne and excellent two course meal prepared by our gourmet chef Simon Polkinghorne. Guest speaker Davina Connors-Calhem a past president of our A grade rivals Old Xavierians was terrific. Thanks to Dorianna Cooper who in spite of the difficult week she had with Gary's hospitalisation organised the luncheon and thanks also to Debbie Mariner for her great job as MC

abcd Seniors: Grind Out Win Over Game Beauy!

St Bernards overcame a determined Beaumaris ln wet and windy conditions at 'the Pit' on Saturday but not before a tough struggle over the four quarters.

The slippery conditions didn't allow for pretty football but it was great to see our blokes really work hard all day.
St Bernards looked to kick away on a number of occassions but Beaumaris would not concede and it wasnt until the 20 min mark of the final quarter that Tate Pearson goal sealed the game

Football Director Paul Garth said "Obviously it was a must win game but we were really pleased with the mind set of our blokes .. Ryan Schroders 50 metre chase and tackle on Beaumaris full forward Gowers exemplified our determination and the way we put our head over the ball was the difference in those conditions" .. see Schrodes chase on video below

abcd Reserves: Celebrate 'Chisels' 250th!
jjjjgvfd

Reserves: After another a slow start for the Ressies St Bernards got on top in the third quarter before running out twenty point winners over Beaumaris.

Chris Mitchell led the way with six majors while Micky Stapleton, Jesse Manunzio, Luke Baird, Jimmy Stapleton and the milestone boy Chris Davis were our best over the four quarters.

Congrats to one of St Bernards favourite sons, Chris 'Chisel' Davis on his magnificent milestone of 250 games .. now for the 300 Chis!

Clang six goals

abcd Thirds: Mono's Boys First Loss!

A 9.20am start in wet and cold conditions and things got bleaker as the Thirds went down for the first time to ladder leader Caulfield.

Poor kicking for goal didn't help but credit to Caulfield who were simply too good on the day.

Good to see Chris Liberatore play the first half and hopefully he will get a few more games under his belt

Nick Counsel did a great job over the four quarters as did evergreen Paul Capes and Matt Briganti,  Tommy Gleeson and Aaron Helenius all showed they could play at a higher level.

sssderf
Aaron Helenius in the best again

abcd Warriors: Miracles Boys Run Into Hot OM's!

sssssssxd
Nick Toy battled hard in the ruck

The Warriors fronted up to top of the ladder Old Melburnians with high hopes but any flicker of an upset was extinguished in the first stanza when OM's bounced out of the blocks to take a 32 pt lead and never looked back.

Matt Trim was probably our only winner on the day but great to see Damien Iannazzo jet in for a run from sunny Qld and Nick Toy battled hard in the ruck all day.

abcd Under 19: Bernards Trounce Marcellin!

Geez .. we were confident going into the game but its not often Marcellin U19 sides get beaten so badly.

Coach Damien Sullivan said "We obviously trounced them on the scoreboard but it wasnt as one sided as that .. our blokes just played really well for the four quarters and didnt let up at any stage"

Jack Gay had another terrific game, Peter Lenory and Matty Stapo gave us drive all day and Jack Saundry, Daniel Riley and Keiren Farrell continued their good form from last week.

The win puts St Bernards equal top with Werribee and sets up a big clash between the two sides for top of the table honours at Soldiers Reserve next week.

abcd Under 18: Pups Do It Tough In Oakleigh .. Best Wishes to Tim O'Sullivan

The U18’s travelled out to Oakleigh to take on the second placed Krushers.

A 2.9 first quarter display reflected a dominance in general play that was not converted into the scoreboard pressure the boys deserved.  Trailing by 7 points at the main break, we let ourselves down badly in the third quarter, conceding 6.5.41 kicking with the aid of a strong breeze.  This poor effort and our early inaccurate kicking for goal were the difference in the end.

Despite the disappointing result, today’s three quarter effort was a fantastic improvement on last week’s insipid effort.  If we show up to play 4 quarters, who knows what we’ll do.
Craig Connelly

Tim O'Sullivan was badly injured in the U18 game at Oakleigh. Tim flew at a contest, only to be polaxed by a strong front-on impact. Tim showed incredible courage to play out the second half, contributing very well but by late afternoon he was rushed to hospital and underwent surgery to repair four ruptured blood vessels.  Tim will spend up to a week in hospital and will not play footy again this year. abcd Thanks To St Bernards From Tristan Mungatopi and Family!

The response to Damien and Jo Sullivan's request to assist the Mungatopi family's move from the Tiwi Islands to Victoria has been terrific and much appreciated by Tristan who visited the club last week.

Tristan has written to the club and asked we pass on his thanks to all those that have helped his family since they have made the move .. see below
uyhygtgbhy

To the St Bernard's Football Club,
.
I am writing to thank the Club for the kindness shown to my family and me recently.  When Damien Sullivan told me about his idea to approach the St Bernard's Footy community for a bit of help setting up my home, I had no idea what the response would be; a genuine display of goodwill and an overwhelming example of practical reconciliation in action. An unlikely community of people banding together to help a young family from the Tiwi Islands.  The trailer load of furniture and other goods that Damien and Jo brought here has turned our modest house into a real home.

The way your community has welcomed and embraced my boys Jordan, Tracker and Antony at training or on game day is inspiring to me as a father.  It has been hard to move away from our community Milikapiti (Snake Bay) on the Tiwi Islands so I can give the kids a better start in life - but this challenge is being been made easier knowing that there are good people out there who are prepared to help, people who I see have given us a hand up and not a hand out. It was good to come to training last Thursday and to meet a few of the people from the St Bernard's Footy community.

I look forward to coming down to the Club again and I know that it is now just a matter of time before Jordan, Tracker and Antony are kicking goals for St Bernard's!!!

Cheers from Tristan Mungatopi & Family

abcd Raff Honoured by VAFA!

Congrats to John Raffle who was honoured by the VAFA at last week's season launch held at the MCG.

Raff was awarded the VAFA Certificate of Merit, a special award that is only handed out to individuals who display a strong commitment to a VAFA club and or the VAFA over a long period of time. In Raffs case he has not only been a club stalwart over many, many years but has also been involved at VAFA level as Team Manager for a number of State Representative sides.

Of eleven nominations for the award this year Raff was one of only six individuals to be granted the award .. well done Raff!

There will be plenty of excitement in the Libba household this weekend with former Bernards junior star Tom Liberatore being selected for his AFL debut for the Western Bulldogs  in their round one clash against Essendon after 18 year old Tom showed strong form in the NAB cup and preseason games.

The Liberatore familiy has been a huge part of Bernards for many years with dad Tony coaching juniors and Tom's brothers Chris (Senior B&F winner) Oliver (U/11) also playing at the club. Mum Jane is always on hand to help out and sister
Meg has been cheering the boys on for years

James Mount has been named Reserves Coach for 2011.

Well known to Bernards supporters
Mounty made his senior debut in 1997 and has played over 150 games for the club. Mounty won the Reserves B&F in 2000 and captained the all conquering Ressies Premiership team in 2003. Still going strong last season Mounty mixed Ressies and Thirds footy  and took out the Thirds Best and Fairest.

Football Director Paul Garth said "Mounty is a good fit for our coaching panel .. we felt it was important to add a coach to the panel who  had first hand experience with our young list.

Mounty is clear on where we are at and what we need to do to improve, he has coached Juniors, is respected amongst the playing group for the way he has gone about his footy and  he is passionate about St Bernards"

Huge congrats to Luke Mitchell and Jordan Schroder who were both drafted last night and now join Tom Liberatore and Mitch Wallis in AFL ranks for 2011. Everyone at Bernards are rapt for the boys and its great to see they will all be playing locally with Luke (Carlton) Jordan (Geelong) and Tom and Mitch (Western Bulldogs)

The four played all of their Junior football together at St Bernards under coach Steve Wallis including premierships at U12, U14 and U16 level. The boys then headed to Calder Cannons where they have played in back to back TAC Cup premierships in the past two seasons.

Mitch Wallis and Tom Liberatore made the Vic Metro U18 side this year with Mitch being named captain and Tom named All Australian. Luke Mitchell overcame a shoulder injury before starring in the TAC Cup finals series and Jordan Schroder's strong 2010 form was also capped off by an excellent finals series.

St Bernards Football Director Paul Garth said, "We believe that four boys being drafted in the same year is a record for any club, all four families are a big part of our club, all of the boys have brothers playing at Bernards .. it's a terrific achievement and clearly demonstrates the success of our junior program"
